Getting around Jaipur on land is not difficult, especially given how developed the Pink City’s internal transportation systems are. Of buses, for instance, there are several hundred in operation, going about the city on their regular routes. There are also taxis, rickshaws, and the car rental agencies, although this last is not very popular and may not be very cost-effective. Let us take each method on its merits: one of the best ways of getting around Jaipur is to take the bus. Buses in the city typically use the city’s famous landmarks or sights as their route markers, and this makes it very easy for travellers to find a bus route that they can use for their sojourn. The entirety of Jaipur is actually serviced by the buses too, which means you need not worry about having difficulty getting to one part of the city. Fairly recently, there have been major leaps in the transport infrastructure favouring bus lines and services as well, due to the government being concerned about the increase in road traffic.

Another method of going about the city is to take a cab. Cabs in Jaipur are quite possibly the best options for travellers seeking comfort in their journey, short of hiring a chauffeur for the trip. Jaipur cabs are often decked out in yellow and black livery, but not always. The only problem you might run into with cabs is that it can be hard to find one off the street: the best way to get a taxi in the city is to call one of the cab agencies or have your hotel call for one on your behalf. Once it arrives, be certain that you settle on the price ahead of time or get a promise from the driver to employ the meter for the fare.

Another minor qualm some might have about taking the cab is that it can cost quite a bit more than other modes of transport here. The difference is especially stark when you compare its costs to those of the rickshaws, which are easily the cheapest options. There are two types of rickshaws here, and the more expensive one still costs only half what a cab would for most destinations. However, these do come with a few more perils.

The older rickshaws—the ones operated without a motor—are still found in Jaipur but are growing increasingly rare. These days, what you typically find on the city roads will be the ones referred to as autos. These auto-rickshaws typically seat about three passengers, but there are some bigger ones that can seat more. If you plan to use autos for getting around Jaipur, be warned that there are a good number of drivers who shall try to charge more than is proper and who try to herd tourists into expensive establishments where they (the drivers) get a commission if the tourists purchase something. To prevent the former, ask your hotel’s proprietor or a local policeman for guidance on the going rate for your fare; to prevent the latter, be firm in where you want to go and refuse all detours the driver suggests.

Shopping in Jaipur is simply one of those things every tourist has to do when they visit the Rajasthani city. This wonderful place is absolutely teeming with products that any smart traveller would want to snatch up, for it was a seat of culture and arts in the past that even now continues to play host to some of the best craftsmen and artisans in India. This is the city of bandhani, of rajais, and of rubystars. What more could the eager shopper want?

First of all, it must be noted that there is no end of options for trademarks of the city to bring home: the Jaipur artisans are known for everything from their smart metalwork to the exquisite pottery they produce. An especially nice souvenir might be a trinket or small sculpture fashioned out of carved ivory, but you could just as easily opt for something more practical like a bolt of the famed bandhani cloth, or perhaps of the wonderful quilts called rajais. There are also a great many sellers of jewellery here, for the city has long been known for the trade and cutting of precious stones and gems.

One particularly valuable gem to be found here is red corundum, otherwise known as the rubystar. The rubystar (also called the star ruby) is often found in an ovoid or roundish shape from the jewellers of the city, and can span the full spectrum of reddish hues, from the lightest pinks to the darkest burgundies. There have even been stones found in the orange shade. The true distinction of this stone, however, is in the intriguing six-rayed white star that spreads from its centre, lending it an unmistakeable appearance. This is an expensive stone, so be prepared to shell out quite a bit for it if it is your intent. That said, be aware that bargaining is almost always possible in Jaipur. Only the top accommodations like major hotels, restaurants, and other facilities do not allow it, as a matter of fact. For just about everything and everywhere else—lodgings included—you should be ready to flex your haggling muscles.

Where should you go to find the best bargains? The bazaars! Jaipur’s bazaars are some of the best places to really get a feel for the local culture, not least because the shop owners shall be only too willing to talk you up for as long as an hour in an effort to persuade you to buy what they have to sell. From Johri to Nehru, the bazaars are definitely well-stocked with everything you might want to buy for souvenirs. Just remember to be friendly while keeping your options open: something found at one shop may well be found in another, and if you are willing to take your time going around to get quotes, you may well end up with a bargain even you never expected. When in doubt, haggle: shopping in Jaipur will definitely become an experience to remember once you walk away with your hard-earned loot after that.

Winter season, which occurs between the months of September and March, is said to be the best time to visit Jaipur. This is because weather conditions are cool and most favorable for touring the city. However, for travelers who are scheduled to visit in the summer months of May and June, they must take precautions to preserve the condition of their good health in Jaipur during their stay. The weather on these months is extremely hot, which could be intolerable for people who are not used to this type of climate.

The scorching heat of the summer season in Jaipur could pose potential health risks such as dehydration or heat stroke. Such conditions can be avoided by drinking a lot of water, juices and other fluids. It is advisable to stay indoors on the hottest times of the day, as most establishments are likely to be closed during these hours. When going outdoors, wearing a wide-brimmed hat or carrying an umbrella can keep you away from direct sunlight which may cause sunburn. The use of sunblock lotion with SPF 20 or higher can keep your skin cool as well. Also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s glare.

Diseases such as malaria and dengue could be prevalent in the area at this time of the year. Before traveling to Jaipur, check with your physician if there are medicines or vaccines against these diseases that should be taken prior to your trip. Pack along clothes that leave little skin exposed to mosquitoes or other insects. Applying an insect repellant several times a day could also protect you from insect bites. Check with the hotel where you will be staying if they have screened rooms or mosquito nets available for your use.

Diarrhea is another common sickness encountered by some travelers in Jaipur. Some are not used to the strong spices used in Indian cuisine. Eating raw food or drinking contaminated water are probable causes of digestive disorders. In order to avoid getting diarrhea while in the city, make sure to bring your own bottle of purified or distilled drinking water wherever you go. Avoid drinking juices or other mixed drinks from places where you are not sure of the safety of the water and ingredients used. Also refrain from eating fresh salads, raw meat or fish and other kinds of uncooked food. Also keep track of food that you might be allergic to, and politely ask waiters and food servers of the ingredients of the dishes that you are not familiar with, in order to avoid any allergic reactions.

In case of medical emergencies, there are hospitals, medical centers and clinics found all over the city that can keep your health in Jaipur in check. Some ayurvedic centers and hospitals are also available. Most medical facilities are easily accessible to both locals and foreign visitors, with competent medical personnel and equipped with modern instruments. Ambulances and emergency services are available 24/7. Travelers to Jaipur are assured that their safety and health are protected but it is best to take the necessary precautions to avoid any unfavorable situations.

The culture and festivals in Jaipur are truly worth mentioning to those interested in the city, not least because they make up such a huge part of the experience and are thus necessary points to cover for tourists who wish to enjoy their stay. The first thing to note regarding culture in Jaipur, perhaps, is that the city has a lot of it. This used to be the seat of rule for some of India’s greatest patrons of the arts, and this is yet reflected in the city today.

There are a great many craftsmen in the city as a result, and this translates to greater chances of your wallet taking a hit if you have a weakness for excellent handicrafts. From bandhani (Indian tie-dyed) cloth to carved ivory trinkets, there is certain to be something that shall catch your eye among the artisans’ wares. And even if you are more interested in livelier, performance-based expressions of art, you shall still find quite a lot of opportunities to indulge yourself here. Several folk art forms and at least one of the eight classical dances of India are specialties of Jaipur, and you can easily catch local performances should you wish it. The famed Raj Mandir Theatre is here as well, and is a great place for an introduction to local films.

Then there are the festivals of Jaipur, a great procession of events and festivities sprinkled liberally throughout the year. From fairs to religious events, from a festival of camels to one of elephants, you can expect to be dazzled by a startling array of sights, sounds, tastes, and experiences in the city. Some of the most popular festivals would be Gangaur, Teej, and the Elephant and Camel Festivals.

Gangaur is basically an event that celebrates both the god Shiva (Gana) and his wife Parvati (Gauri), and it is of particular import in all of Rajasthan, although most locals will tell you that the Gangaur celebrations in certain cities (such as Udaipur and Jaipur itself) outdo those in other cities in terms of spectacle. As for Teej, it is notable because of the hard-to-ignore procession that wends its way throughout the city whenever it happens, filled with females sending hopes of marital contentment and happiness to Shiva and Parvati again. Finally, the Elephant and Camel Festivals are obvious draws for those eager to witness races, polo matches, and all sorts of events being held with trained animals from these species.

Now one other thing you have to remember about the culture and festivals in Jaipur is that although the people are indeed generally conservative—conservative in dress and dealings with strangers, for instance—they are nonetheless fairly warm folk if you succeed in demonstrating your respect and interest in and for their customs and culture. Many a Jaipur resident shall be quite eager to exchange notes with you on culture if you prove yourself a respectable as well as friendly person, so remember to be as polite as possible without being overly cool. The younger Jaipur residents in particular tend to be quite intrigued by people who are obviously foreigners, and will often chat up a tourist happily upon being given the slightest window of opportunity.

You have to know what to wear in Jaipur if you want your stay to be a comfortable one. The first concern here is one of practicality, of course: if you go to the city at different times of the year, you shall be likely to run into different temperatures and types of weather. A person going to the city in December shall certainly experience a climate far removed from what he would experience were he going in July.

The smart thing to do is to check the weather and climate forecasts for the city. In general, it pays to remember that the months from June to September see the most precipitation and are fairly warm, while the months around December and January tend to be a bit drier and a lot cooler. If you are going in the warm months, it pays to pack cotton clothing, as it shall be quite humid as well as sweaty. On the other hand, if you are going in the winter time, you should definitely think about packing a few woolly jumpers or coats to keep yourself warm and toasty. Jaipur’s winters can go below 10 degrees Celsius, although they can also reach warmer temperatures of the high 20’s.

Besides this practical question is another thing to consider when thinking of what to wear in Jaipur: the cultural prescription for dress. It is a given that when you go to another country, you are going to be encountering a different culture and different rules of propriety are likely to apply. As far as Jaipur is concerned, you may want to recall that this is a fairly conservative nation. Jaipur most definitely has its fair share of encounters with the more liberal west, especially from travellers and tourists, but it is still no Goa.

This means that it is advised to always err on the conservative side for Jaipur fashion. People here can be sensitive to the manner in which you dress, and choosing the wrong clothes is a good way to get dozens of disapproving glances—not even veiled ones, mind you—from the people on the street. Women in particular have to be careful: Jaipur still has rather strict rules on what is acceptable for females to wear, and women wearing clothes that emphasise their curves or show more skin than considered permissible are likely to get a great many rude comments thrown their way. Harassment is not unheard of for foreigners travelling through the city in clothing that is considered too liberal.

Wear full trousers, long sleeved or full-sleeved tops, and avoid things like deep V-necks. A good idea might actually be to go native and wear the local dress. A shalwar kameez, for instance, would be something you can get from just about any local clothing shop, and which might serve you very well in your travels. Wearing what you do at home is fine as long as you avoid the skimpier, less conservative clothes: modesty is the order of the day here if you want to enjoy your stay. Overall, this is what to remember when thinking of what to wear in Jaipur.

Getting to know the weather in Jaipur is an elementary part of planning a trip to the city, as it can tell you what clothes to bring for your trip, when to go, and which months to avoid. The easiest way to describe the Jaipur climate is “semi-arid”. This is a fairly warm place, like the rest of India, and even in the winter months, temperature highs have been recorded around the mid-20’s on the Celsius scale.

The beauty of the Jaipur climate is that because it is semi-arid, there is relatively little to worry about by way of rainfall if you are the sort of traveller who dislikes making his way about a city in the rain. There is rain during the monsoon season, yes, but it is not the sort of rain that is likely to lead to flooded streets, unlike in other cities. Those who want to avoid the rainy season anyway should just steer clear of the usual rainy months: July, August, and September see the most precipitation, although a bit of rain also makes its presence felt in May and June.

As far as heat goes, Jaipur should not be tough to take at any time of the year if you are used to warm places. Note that “warm” in this case means temperatures passing the 40-degree mark on the Celsius scale, or past 104 degrees in Fahrenheit. May is the month with the most searing heat in Jaipur, and temperature highs have been recorded in the past at around 45 degrees Celsius. The months of June and July actually tend not to fall far behind, so you might as well avoid them too if you do not fancy the bright Jaipur sun of summer. If you do go during summer, be sure that you bring a lot of water around on your travels: the heat can get dehydrating here.

There are much cooler months available for a visit, of course, specifically in the winter. These would be the months of December and January, where temperatures typically average around 15 to 16 degrees Celsius (59 to 62 degrees Fahrenheit), although hotter highs have been recorded at this time too of around 22 to 24 degrees Celsius (72 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit). The record lows achieved by the weather at these times has struck 7.8 degrees Celsius (46 degrees Fahrenheit) in the past, however, so you have a fairly good chance of seeing some genuinely cool, tolerable weather during your visit if you go during these months.

Even should you scorn to go to the city during the winter months, there are other times of the year that may be nearly as tolerable for you. For example, the two months following January, February and March, tend to be fairly cool too, with recorded lows around the 15-degree-Celsius mark (60 degrees Fahrenheit). They typically average out to temperatures around the 20’s on the Celsius scale, as do the months of October and November. These are also prime months for visiting the city if you want to experience the city with the more accommodating weather in Jaipur.

Jaipur is one of India’s more popular tourist destinations, attracting travelers from all over the world. The months from September to March are the best time to visit, when the weather is most pleasant. Tourists and business travelers alike will be delighted to find out that there are plenty of accessible options for getting to Jaipur coming from any major city in India.

There are several transportation options for travelers bound for Jaipur, but possibly the most efficient and best way to get to Jaipur is by air travel. Jaipur is serviced by a number of domestic airlines with daily flights to and from major Indian cities. Getting to Jaipur by air is hassle-free with several direct flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Udaipur, Jodhpur and other cities. Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Go Air and other domestic airlines service Jaipur through its international airport.

The airport in Jaipur is located at Sanganer and is the only international airport in Rajasthan. The airport is located no more than thirteen kilometers from the city center and operates a number of domestic flights and selected international flights, to Muscat or Dubai, among others. There are also plenty of hotels situated near the vicinity of the airport or car rental services for the comfort of travelers upon their arrival to Jaipur.

Getting to Jaipur by land is another popular option, where travelers may either take a train, bus or a private vehicle. Traveling by train is an inexpensive and comfortable choice for land travel. Jaipur is connected with the Indian Railways network with trains plying the city from the rest of the country. Air-conditioned trains like the Shatabdi Express and the Pink City Express have direct trips from Delhi, which takes about five hours. Daily connections are also available from Lucknow, Chennai, Bikaner, Agra and other key cities.

Jaipur Junction station is the main railway station in Jaipur, located at the heart of the city. Its accessible location makes it an important railway station for the state of Rajasthan, with facilities for the convenience of local and foreign travelers alike.

Tourists who wish to travel to Jaipur by bus can avail of the services of Rajasthan State Transport Corporation (RSTC), with hourly trips from Delhi, Agra, major cities, and most destinations in the state of Rajasthan. Both air-conditioned and non-A/C buses are available for leisurely trips along paved and well-maintained national and state highways leading to Jaipur. There are also private bus companies operating in Jaipur, but these buses, while cheaper, avoid highways and may not be as comfortable. Most buses run from the Jaipur Central Bus Station, located at Sindhi camp and walking distance from the main railway station.

For those who dislike public transportation, there are car rental services from Delhi that offer self-driven or chauffeur-driven cars to Jaipur. Traveling by private vehicle through the national highway from Delhi to Jaipur will take less than four hours, slightly faster than riding a bus, but may cost more than double the price of bus or train fare. Tourists who prefer to travel using a rented car must remember to bargain with the driver to get a good deal.

First time travelers may find it helpful to purchase a map to locate where is Jaipur, or jot down the coordinates 26°55’34″N 75°49’25″E prior to the trip. Getting to Jaipur is easy and convenient, especially if coming from Delhi. There are plenty and reliable transportation options available to both local and foreign tourists bound for Jaipur.

The love for polo in Jaipur is immense. The game of cricket is arguably more popular, strictly speaking, but it is a given in all of India. Polo in Jaipur has a special place in the hearts of the locals for its history with the royal family and the strength of its tradition in the city across the ages.

It is said that polo in Jaipur is special because this is the city where the game truly began to inspire people in the country to try out the sport. The game was already being played in Jaipur in the 19th century, and the late 1880’s was a time of supremacy for the Jaipur team as it played and won against many of the other teams in the country. In the 1930’s, the city’s team actually took the National Championship nine times in succession, gaining it an unparalleled record of consecutive wins not just in the country but also in the sport. Even now, people regard that team as having been capable of extending their winning streak if not for the outbreak of World War II.

The team is perhaps the most famous Indian polo team in history because of its wins, as well as the wins it managed to garner in the UK (where it actually snatched the Open Championship, among others, right from under the Englishmen’s noses). Part of what made the team so noteworthy is that Maharajah Sawai Man Singh II was one of its leading players and was also one of the members of the team that won the world championship for India in the late 50’s. The maharajah was well-loved for many things by the people of Jaipur during his reign, but it cannot be denied that part of that love was formed by their pride in him as a world-acknowledged polo athlete. The maharajah actually perished as a result of an accident during a game in England.

The people of Jaipur are aware of the tradition of polo playing their former rulers had, and are of course proud of the long association of the city’s name with some of the greatest polo players in history—not merely in the country but in the world. As a result, polo games in Jaipur are very well-attended. The city’s polo club actually does not even charge attendance fees to the people once the polo season begins, permitting them to come in as they wish and join in the enjoyment of this historic sport.

In order to look out for games of polo in Jaipur, just track the website of the Jaipur Riding & Polo Club to see what events they have planned. Take note that traditional horse polo is not the only option in the city, by the way: sometimes, you may even hear of polo games being organised in what is perhaps an even more traditional format in the city—namely, that of having the players seated atop camels or even enormous elephants instead of mere horses.
